This Privacy Policy explains what data the Smart Leaf mobile app handles, how it is used, and what choices you have. Smart Leaf is designed to work primarily on your device — your plant photos are analyzed locally and are not uploaded to our servers for disease detection.
1. Introduction
Smart Leaf ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mobile application that helps you identify plant leaf diseases using your phone's camera or photo library. Disease detection runs entirely on your device using a bundled machine learning model. This policy applies to the Smart Leaf app available on Android (package name: com.yasinwalum.smartleaf).
By using Smart Leaf, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. Information We Collect
Smart Leaf collects and stores a limited amount of data, all of which remains on your device unless you choose to share content externally.
2.1 Camera & Photos
When you scan a plant leaf or pick an image from your gallery, the app accesses your device camera or photo library. This access is initiated by you and is used solely to analyze the selected image for disease identification. We do not access your camera or photos in the background.
2.2 Scan History
If you save a scan result, Smart Leaf stores the following locally on your device:
- A compressed JPEG thumbnail of the scanned image
- The disease prediction result and confidence score
- The date and time of the scan
- The model version used for the prediction
Scan history is stored in your app's private document storage and is not transmitted to any server.
2.3 App Settings
Smart Leaf saves your preferences locally, including your confidence threshold setting and language preference. These are stored using your device's local storage (AsyncStorage) and are not synced to the cloud.
3. On-Device Processing
All disease detection is performed on your device using a bundled TensorFlow Lite model (smartleaf_fp16.tflite). When you scan a leaf, the image is processed locally — it is never uploaded to our servers or any third-party service for analysis.
This means your plant photos remain on your phone throughout the entire identification process. The app works fully offline for scanning and diagnosis.
4. Network Usage
Smart Leaf does not require an internet connection for core functionality (scanning, diagnosis, and browsing the disease library). However, the app may use your network connection in the following limited cases:
- Reference images: Some disease detail pages may load additional reference images from external sources (such as Wikimedia) when you view the "More images" gallery.
- External links: Disease guides include links to external resources (e.g., Wikipedia, university extension pages). Tapping these links opens them in your device's browser — we do not control those third-party sites.
No personal data is sent over the network as part of these features.
5. What We Do Not Collect
Smart Leaf does not collect or require:
- User accounts or login credentials
- Your name, email address, or phone number (unless you contact us directly)
- Location data
- Device identifiers for tracking or advertising
- Analytics or crash reporting data (no third-party analytics SDKs are included)
- Any data transmitted to our servers — we operate no backend for this app
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. Because all scan data stays on your device, there is nothing for us to share.
The only interaction with third parties occurs when you voluntarily tap an external link in a disease guide, which opens a third-party website in your browser. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
Scan history and saved images persist on your device until you delete them. You can remove all saved scans at any time:
- Open Smart Leaf → Settings → Clear scan history
This permanently deletes all saved scan records and their associated image files from your device. App settings can be reset by clearing the app's data in your device settings.
Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
8. Permissions
Smart Leaf requests the following device permissions:
- Camera — to capture photos of plant leaves for disease scanning
- Photos / Media library — to let you select existing images from your gallery for analysis
Smart Leaf does not use your microphone and does not record audio.
You can revoke camera or photo permissions at any time through your device settings. Doing so will disable the corresponding features but will not affect other app functionality.
9. Children's Privacy
Smart Leaf is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such information.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Latest update" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
